Our Sept meeting will be at the Point4 in Hereford on Weds 28 starting at 7:30pm - lots to talk about following the SFD event and launch of Tuxedu this week - everyone's welcome.
Next Month when the meeting is on Weds 26th Oct (venue TBC) Tony Sales will be demonstrating how to create a customised version of Linux - using the Tuxedu build process as an example.
Software Freedom Day is nearly here and we have all been very busy organising behind the scenes, making contacts with schools for the Open Source Schools Project which is launching at our SFD event and planning our workshop material including a 'dry run' with some willing children from friends and neighbours of HLUG members.
Guest speaker at HLUG's Software Freedom Day event will be Bob Higgie, Senior Lecturer in Computing at Herefordshire College of Technology he will be speaking following the Open Source Schools Project launch at 2pm about the use of Open Source Software in education and the importance of ensuring that students understand the fundamentals of computing. There will be a Q&A session following his talk.
Our HLUG meeting will be as usual at The Point 4's cafe/bar in Hereford.
It will start at 7:30pm and we will of course be discussing the imminent SFD 2011 event plus the Open Source Schools Project and
hopefully Tony will update us on Tuxedu.
If the weather is good we'll be out on the terrace - so see you there
We now have a A4 poster and an A5 flyer version ready to go please print off some copies and put them up in your local area (please do ask for permission first before putting them on noticeboards etc - people are usually very happy to help and its a chance to explain what FOSS is) and do let us know on the Pirate Pad where you have put them so we know which areas have been covered.
The July HLUG meeting will be as usual at the Point 4 Cafe Bar at the National College for the Blind in Hereford. For those who need to apply for a CRB for the schools project please arrive at 7pm (don't forget your ID so we can complete the forms) and for everyone else start time will be 7:30pm.
We will be discussing plans for ISFD, the Open Source Schools Project and Tuxedu.
Julian is going to do a quick demo/introduction to Archipel which
is a new jabber based Virtualisation manager .
Sounds as if it will be a busy meeting - everyone is welcome - so see you there.
Busy, busy, busy...
Less than a week to our July meeting and we are busy preparing for another bold leap forward spreading FLOSS goodness around the county. Our schools project, to be launched at ISFD at All Saints church on September 17th is now beginning to take on real shape and substance.
This month's meeting was well attended and thanks to the earlier start we managed to combine admiring Geoff's scripting skills and erudition in some obscure fields of knowledge with a good deal of focused business.
We have chosen education as the focus for our ISFD effort.
The aim is to offer some kind of presentation to staff and students at primary and secondary levels, at some suitable time around ISFD itself. Some members have already taken on the task of initial approaches to some local schools. Keep up to date via the PiratePad;
Noticed I had been not keeping the website up to date with our events - so must try harder ! We always hold monthly meetings, on the 4th Wednesday of the month and usually at the Point 4 http://www.hlug.org.uk/node/4 in Hereford opposite the RNC buildings.
This month we will be starting to gear up our efforts for our Software Freedom Day Event coming in September again to be held in central Hereford at All Saints Church.
If you want to help out, please come along to our June meeting.
HLUG's April meeting will this month be on the 3rd Wednesday - the 20th April to avoid the Easter holiday period when members may be away. So join us if you can - usual time 7:30pm at The Point 4 Hereford
