Welcome to the Herefordshire Linux User Group !
We are a friendly group who support ourselves and others in the county with Linux and Open Source Software via our regular monthly meetings and busy mailing list. We have members young and old, knowledgeable and new to Linux.
We have worked on projects such as supplying very low cost Linux pc's to Community First, so community groups can obtain affordable decent computing facilities. We have also put on demonstrations to both local Friends of the Earth and Green Party about the use of Linux and Open Source.
We also have monthly meetings usually the 3rd Weds of each month, with general help offered, and occasional workshops, and events, such as Software Freedom Day
If you're interested in becoming a member of our group, please join the mailing list here, there is no charge to join :-
I haven't had time to report on our recent meetings, but pleased to see we are getting higher numbers coming along. Cookies in Leominster, our main venue these days is proving popular, and again thanks go to Matthew shop/gallery/net cafe owner and LUG member for hosting us and making us feel welcome !
Hello everyone, my name is Ken, I have used Windows 98, XP and more recently Vista which was installed on a new HP pc, after which I discovered that most if not all the software was installed on a trial basis only, I was somewhat peeved to say the least, and so I started looking around for alternatives and happened upon OpenSuse, purchased a DVD from The Linux Shop and installed it, had a few teething problems which I expected, but for the past month or so I have only used that OS and am very pleased with it, Open Office, Firebird, F Spot etc. are all excellent.
Unfortunately, our meeting venue for tomorrow's meeting is not available, and we have only had late notice of this. I am hoping that a meeting can be arranged at a local pub instead, so please follow our mailing list for the latest information on this. Apologies for late notice of this change, but it was unavoidable.
Our next meeting will be held again on the third Weds of the month, ie 21st October 2009 as below :-
We will be returning to Cookeys Net Cafe in Leominster. Cookeys is not just an Internet Cafe, but a Computer shop, and Art Gallery too.
HLUG is putting is putting together our final touches to our first event for Software Freedom Day. This is a global event, where community groups like ours try to explain and demonstrate that there is life after Windows and Macs, and the real true benefits of Open Source Software.
From 10 - 1 pm at Cookies Internet Cafe and PC Shop (on Black Swan Walk in between the High St and Somerfield) , in Leominster we will be providing expert advice, giving demos and showing how really quick & easy it is to install Linux on your average PC.
Hah! The clever Ubuntu 8.04 found and identified my wireless card immediately after I'd struggled for hours to find it with an updated XP system. In XP the card wasn't seen at all in a normal hardware search. Delving deeper by another programme found it but displayed a yellow ? meaning unknown. Intel's website searched my laptop and told me the card isn't an Intel product (oh yes it is). Eventually I discovered a clever detective program which searched out all of my hardware, confirming what Ububtu had discovered. Then I was able to download the necessary driver and made my wifi work in XP.
Our next meeting will be held again on the third Weds of the month, ie 16th September 2009 as below :-

I know its been over a month now since Mint 7 was released, but I thought "better late than never" and decided to upgrade my current distro (Mint 6)...
I've been using stickwikis for my internal notes
since I read about them in a linux mag
www.stickwiki.com (is my link to them)
but as I havnt half a year spare to decipher the javascript
I worry if something goes wrong I wont be able to recover my data
so I've been looking for some way to keep lots of notes
with hyperlinks to others on my hard disk like
[file:///D:/hatfield-d/hatfieldw/hatfield-gwiki.htm]
The best I've come up with so far is NVU
http://www.nvu.com/
which is opensource and trisexual (mac winxp ubuntu)
and I can rightclick a link and jump there in another window
